Abstract

To search for family caregiver¢¥s knowledge, attitudes and practices about early rehabilitation for the stroke patients, 102 family caregivers of patients were sampled, who have been receiving treatment for the stroke in K university general hospital.
The data were collected from October 24 to November 30, 1994, by means of a structured questionnaire.
The questionnaire material by researchers consists of nine questions related to caregiver¢¥s general characteristics, eight questions of patient¢¥s character, 38 of knowledge, 10 of attitudes and. 17 of practices.
Caregiver¢¥s general characteristics patient¢¥s character, and the level of knowledges, attitudes, and practices were analyzed by a percentage, aver-age and standard deviation. Knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding general characteristics and patient¢¥s character was vertified by ¢¥t¢¥ or ¢¥F" test.
The results having significant difference with the level of P<.05 were analyzed by using "posterior multiple comparison test". To investigate the relation among knowledge, attitudes and practices, The "pearson correlation coefficients" was applied and, to certify variables of the most influencing on practice and explanation elements, the stepwise multiple regression was used.
The results of study are as follows :
1. The knowledge level about rehabilitation of the stroke patients marked average 26.9 score out of total 38, the attitudes level was affirmative of 4.03, and the practices level showed comparatively high point of average 4.2.
2. The knowledge level seen from general characteristics was different according to the age, to the relation with patient, and to the former experiences in rehabilitation treatment. The knowledge level by age marked significant differences between under the age of twenties and fifties. The inowledge¢¥was the higher between under the age of twenties and the thirties. The knowledge level ac-cording to the relation with patients, the offsprings were higher than the spouses. The attitudes was significantly different by age and the difference was showen between the age of thirties and fifties. The thirties showed more affirmative attitude than the fifties. The practices level showed higher with the group of people having been heard rehabilitation treatment than the group of people not having.
3. There wasn¢¥t the statistically significant difference in knowledge level of patient¢¥s characters. The attitudes level had a significant difference, according to the patient¢¥s palsied side and ADL.
Caregivers in case of right side palsy and comparatively in case of independent patients were more affirmative than those of both sides palsy and perfectly dependent. In the case of practices level, the score of the group which has not experienced in stroke was higher than the experienced group. In ADL, the practice score is higher with the mostly dependent or little dependent group than the perfectly dependent one.
4. In the view of the relation with knowledge, attitudes and practices, a little relation between attitudes and practices was found (r=.346, P=.000).
5. The level of rehabilitation management of caregiver¢¥s practices showed 11% in caregivers¢¥ attitudes, 5.3% in the little dependent case of ADL patients, and 6.8% in the mostly dependent case, with the total level of 23%.
From the results of this study, it can be said as follows :
1) It is proposed to research variously the knowledge, attitudes and practices about the stroke patients¢¥ early rehabilitation, with the medical staffs.
2) It is proposed to develop the educational program about early rehabilitation management for the stroke patients, to apply to actual situation and then, to try an experimental study for the comparable evaluations.
3) It is needed the social rehabilitation management including discharged patients from the hospital and the continuous care for their further independent life.
To search for family caregiver¢¥s knowledge, attitudes and practices about early rehabilitation for stroke patient, we sampled 102 family caregivers of patients who have been receiving treatment for stroke in K university general hospital and surveyed from October 24 to November 30, 1994, by means of a structured questionnaire.
Questionnaire material by researchers consists of nine questions related to sample¢¥s general characteristics, eight questions of patient¢¥s character, 38 questions of knowledge, 10 of attitudes and 17 of practices.
Characteristics, knowledges, attitudes, practices level related to general character were analyzed by a percentage, average and standard deviation and variance verification of knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding general character and patients uses ¢¥t¢¥ or ¢¥F test. Results having significant difference with a level of P<.0.5 are analyzed by using "Dusan". Al*r+- 01 Z *-141d. To investigate the relation among knowledge, attitudes and practices, we applied "person 31 -t ~~ L 4, 4" and, to certify variables of the most influencing on practice and explanation elements, we used the stepwise multiple regression.
The results of study are as follows :
1. The knowledge level about rehabilitation of stroke patient marks an average 26.9 score out of total 38, attitudes level is affirmative of 4.03 and practices level shows comparative high point of average 4.2.
2. The knowledge level seen from general characteristics is different, according to age, relation with patient, former experiences"in rehabilitation treatment. The knowledge level by age marks significant difference between people from 20 years old or under and 50 years old people, and between 30 years old ones and 50 years old ones. The level of people from 20 years old or under and 30 years old ones is the highest. Considering samples¢¥ knowledge level according to relation with patient, offsprings are higher than spouses. The attitudes by age is different significantly. There is the significant difference between ¢¥30 and 50 years old peoples and 30 years old ones show more affirmative attitude than 50 years ones. In practices level, people having been heard rehabilitation treatment are higher than not having.
3. There isn¢¥t the statistically significant difference in knowledge level of patient¢¥s related characters. Attitudes level has a significant difference, according to patient¢¥s palsied side and general living level. Caregivers in case of right side palsy and comparative independent patients are more affirmative than both sides palsy and perfect dependent patients. In the case of practices level, the point of group not having experienced in stroke is higher than having experienced group. In general living level, practicing point of most or little dependent groups is higher than perfectly dependent people.
4. In the view of the relation with knowledge, attitudes and practices, a little relation between attitudes and practices was found. (r=.346, P=.000)
5. Caregiver¢¥s practices level of rehabilitation management is 115 of caregivers¢¥ attitudes, 5.3% in the a little dependent case of patient¢¥s general life, 6.8% in the most dependent case. Then, total level , is 23%.
From the results of this study, it can be said as follows :
1) It is proposed to research variously the¢¥knowledge, attitudes and practices about stroke patient¢¥s early rehabilitation, with the sample of medicals.
2) It is proposed to develop the educational program about early rehabilitation management for stroke patient, apply to actual condition and then, try an experimental study for comparable evaluation.
3) It is needed the social rehabilitation management including a leaving hospital and to give the continuous care for independent life.
